1931년 낙성된 '체부동 성결교회'와 그 한참 후 지어진 연접한 한옥은 오랜 시간 동안 덧대어지고 변형되었지만, 다행히 외벽과 골조의 속살이 보존되어 있다. 재료 자체가 지니고 있는 끈질긴 물성과 공들인 결구방식도 큰 몫을 했지만 무계획적으로 덧대어져 볼썽사납게 원형을 가리고 있었던 다른 재료가 오히려 원형의 보호막역할을 했다는 생각에 안도한다. 지금까지 근대 건축들이 남겨지고 일상의 공간으로 오랜기간 자리잡고 그 가치를 지속적으로 평가받는 과정이 전무했다는 전제가 성립한다면, 이제는 그 반대의 중요한 사례로 담백한 아름다움을 가진 벽돌쌓기, 견고하고 중후한 목재트러스와 천장재, 그리고 친근한 한옥의 보와 서까래등이 조심스럽게 수리되고 오염이 제거된 후 쓸모있는 공간으로서 시민들의 일상으로 돌아가면서 '체부동 성결 교회'는 더 이상 박제된 근대의 '유산'이 아니라, 오늘과 내일의 살아있는 '보물'이 될 것이다.

프로그램 배치 전략 - 교회의 예배당이었던 부분은 생활 오케스트라의 연습 및 공연 공간으로 계획하며, 기존의 사무실과 기도실 부분은 오케스트라의 중소규모 연습실과 응접실로 변환한다. 한옥은 불법 증축 부분을 걷어내 마당을 드러내고, 한옥 원형의 공간에 북카페, 자유공간, 화장실 등을 계획한다. 한옥 부분의 실들은 교회 부분에서 행사 시 준비 및 부속 공간으로도 쓰일 수 있다.

교회와 한옥마당 사이 완충공간 - 교회와 한옥 사이에는 '마을 소개공간'이라는 완충공간을 제공한다. 평소에는 교회 쪽으로 열려 있는 공간이며, 적절한 기후나 행사 시에는 한옥 마당 쪽의 접이문을 열어, 외부 공간과 교회를 직접 연결하는 준 외부 공간이 된다.

The Chebu-dong Holiness Church, completed in 1931, and the adjacent hanok built some time later, have been extended and altered repeatedly over the years. Fortunately, however, the core structure and the inner layers of the exterior walls remain preserved. The inherent durability of the materials and the carefully crafted joinery played a significant role in this preservation. Ironically, the later additions—applied without clear planning and visually obscuring the original form—may have acted as a protective shield for the historic fabric. This realization brings a sense of relief.

If we assume that there has been little precedent for modern architectural heritage to remain embedded in everyday life while continuously being evaluated and appreciated over time, then this project proposes an important counterexample. The restrained beauty of the brick masonry, the robust and dignified wooden trusses and ceiling finishes, and the familiar beams and rafters of the hanok will be carefully repaired and cleaned of accumulated damage. As these elements return to use as functional spaces within citizens’ daily lives, the Chebu-dong Holiness Church will no longer remain a preserved relic of the modern era, but instead become a living “treasure” of today and tomorrow.

 

Programmatic Strategy - The former sanctuary of the church will be planned as a rehearsal and performance space for a community orchestra. The existing office and prayer rooms will be converted into small- and medium-sized rehearsal rooms and reception areas for the orchestra.

In the hanok section, illegal extensions will be removed to reveal the courtyard. Within the restored spatial framework of the hanok, a book café, flexible community space, and restrooms will be introduced. The rooms in the hanok may also function as preparation and support spaces during events held in the church building.

 

Buffer Space Between the Church and the Hanok Courtyard - Between the church and the hanok, a transitional buffer space titled the “Village Information Space” will be created. Under normal conditions, this space remains open toward the church side. During suitable weather or special events, folding doors facing the hanok courtyard can be opened, transforming the area into a semi-exterior space that directly connects the courtyard and the church interior.
