봉제 박물관
오랜 시간 동대문 시장의 배후지로서 중요한 역할을 해온 창신동 중심에 들어설 봉제박물관은, 소규모 봉제산업의 역사와 역할을 기록하고 담아내는 전시공간일 뿐만 아니라, 세계문화유산 등재를 앞둔 한양도성과 봉제거리, 그리고 세월의 켜와 가치를 간직한 주변의 골목길들을 연결하는 새로운 마을재생의 구심점이 되어야 한다.
계획안은 이러한 지역성을 존중하면서도, 봉제박물관이 동네에 신선한 활력을 불어넣는 거점이 되도록 하는 데에 초점을 두었다. 북측 도로와 직접 연결된 외부계단은 빼어난 조망을 갖춘 옥상정원으로 곧장 이어지며, 방문객들에게 도시와 한양도성을 함께 바라볼 수 있는 열린 동선을 제공한다. 1층 로비의 열린 카페는 지역 주민과 방문객을 따뜻하게 맞이하는 완충공간이자 소통의 장소로 계획되었다.
지하에는 상설전시장을, 2층에는 기획전시장을 배치하였다. 외장에는 창신동 일대에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 붉은 벽돌을 주요 재료로 사용하여 주변 맥락과 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 하였다. 그 위로는 씨실과 날실을 상징하는 다양한 크기의 착색 아연도강판 패널을 길고 높게 세워 하나의 막을 형성하였다. 이는 창신동이 지금까지 쌓아온 봉제 산업의 역사와 앞으로 이어질 패션 산업에서의 자긍심을 상징적으로 드러낸다.
Located at the heart of Changsin-dong—an area that has long served as an essential supporting district for the Dongdaemun Market—the Sewing Museum is envisioned not only as an exhibition space that records and preserves the history and role of small-scale garment production, but also as a new focal point for neighbourhood regeneration. It is intended to connect the Seoul City Wall, which is awaiting UNESCO World Heritage inscription, the surrounding sewing streets, and the network of alleyways that hold the accumulated layers and values of time.
This proposal respects the strong local character of the district while focusing on establishing the museum as a vibrant anchor that brings fresh energy to the community. An external staircase directly connected to the northern street leads visitors up to a rooftop garden with outstanding views, offering an open circulation path from which both the city and the historic wall can be appreciated. On the ground floor, an open café within the lobby warmly welcomes local residents and visitors alike, serving as a transitional space for encounter and exchange.
The basement houses the permanent exhibition gallery, while the second floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Red brick—commonly found throughout Changsin-dong—was chosen as the primary exterior material to ensure a natural dialogue with the surrounding context. Rising above it, a tall screen of colored galvanized steel panels in varying sizes evokes the warp and weft of weaving. This symbolic layer expresses both the legacy of Changsin-dong’s garment industry and its continuing pride and role within the future of fashion production.
